Chile Deep Sea Pilots
“As per IMO Resolution A.485(XII), 1981: A Deep-Sea Pilot is a person, other than a member of the ship’s crew, who performs pilotage duties during the ship’s passage outside the seaward limits of local pilotage areas.”
Inspired by the international concept of the “Deep Sea Pilot”, used in key routes such as the North Sea, the Strait of Malacca, the Singapore Strait, and the Baltic Sea, the Magellan Deep Sea Pilot service was born.
This service arises as a response to a need expressed by shipping operators:
to have continuous, professional advisory services throughout the navigation across the central and western sections of the Strait of Magellan, as well as along the western coast of southern Chile’s Pacific Ocean. All of this while capitalizing on the operational and economic benefits that this route offers compared to the Cape Horn route, enhanced by tariff incentives in light dues implemented by the Chilean State to promote its use.
